Hank’s DNA results are in!

I’ve got Hank’s DNA and genetic health screening results! And they are fascinating!

So take a look at this Hank dog. Turns out there is a breed in his DNA that was a big surprise, but explains a few mysteries for me!

So what do you think Hank is?

Turns out we have a surprise ancestor!!

We were told Hank was from a purebred Greenland Dog father, and an Alaskan Husky mother.

This is partially true!

Hank’s dad is a purebred Greenland dog.

However, his mother is a mixed dog. Part Siberian Husky, part Alaskan Malamute, but for a surprise, he had a purebred maternal great-grandparent, who was a Pointer!

Well this explains where his super short fur comes from!

The testing also included health results. Hank has an inbreeding coefficient of 0%. And he is came out as clear for the 163 genetic diseases that he was screened for.

He has one Genetic trait to pass along to his vet. He has a Low Normal ‘Alanine Aminotransferase Activity’. This means his ALT value from a liver test will be naturally low so this should be known if he ever has his liver values tested.

He is a carrier of ‘Collie Eye Anomaly, Choroidal Hypoplasia’ but is unlikely to ever show any signs of this, just something to know if we were breeding him (we’re not, he’s been neutered).

Well isn’t this nice! I wish I had similar tests on my Goldens to see if any conditions they developed would have showed up here, although I’m sure I wouldn’t have wanted to know in advance.
