Alberta baby!!!

Alberta baby!!!

Our cushy hotel provided a free breakfast this morning!

We didn’t drive too far today but just far enough. We are trying to book two nights ahead in this stretch so we aren’t left scrambling. (Heading to Banff and Jasper for the first time!)

So tonight we are in Grande Prairie, Alberta at the KOA campground.

The weather is warm and windy, perfect for a mid afternoon arrival so we could pitch the soaking wet tent. And now it’s dry!!

The campground operator said this campground is visited regularly by a black bear, but if we do our dishes in their laundry room, we’d be fine.

Noted.

Today’s road was busy. Big trucks. Transports. Fuel B trains. And bicycles!!! They were all going to the same place we were, Mile 0 of the Alaskan Highway in Dawson Creek. Some sort of organized ride. Even with a paved shoulder it was nerve wracking to make sure everyone had enough space! We met the biggest combine I’ve ever seen too!

We visited the Visitor’s Centre. And smart! They have an outdoor sticker forest for every single jackass who is on their way to the Yukon and Alaska and sticking their stupid trip sticker on everything. Such a pet peeve. At least here they had somewhere they could stick it without ruining an actual sign.

The truck is organized, I swear. Just little.

Next up, the giant beaver in Beaverlodge. BC!

This guy’s super cool!

We are in farm land areas now. You really feel the start of the prairies as you drive into Grande Prairie. We even saw a long grain train today already!

So far I haven’t had a bad experience with a KOA campground. This one is no exception. Looks like people park here longer term and then work somewhere during the day. Lots of big trucks came in at supper time to park near trailers that were already here.

We made pulled pork for supper. The tent is dry now. The operator even gave us a different site than we booked, one with more sunshine to dry the tent. Nice guy!!

And now our teeth are brushed and we’re sitting behind the truck reading before bed. I know we are close to town, but going for a drive doesn’t seem very relaxing so we are content to chill here.

By the way, the Jackery battery powering the Igloo fridge cooler is doing a fantastic job. The battery fully charges as we drive. We have the fridge set to 4C (at 3C I had a slushy ginger ale).

Any questions for us? It seems like we’ve got a bunch of people following along! Drop a comment below and let us know!

Good night!

  1. Hi there! I just drove through the Rockies to visit Bryan in Golden. You are going to be gobsmacked by the beauty. Lots and lots of people though but I didn’t see a single bear so enjoy!
