Hurricane Irene

Everyday Hurricane Irene moves a bit east, and gives Nova Scotia a bigger chance of seeing hurricane action.

This is a major storm. This morning it strengthened to a hurricane 3.

Right now it looks like North Carolina is in the path, then maybe Long Island, then New England. At some point, a “shortwave trough” coming through the Great Lakes will push the storm to the east, and that is what will determine it’s path through the Maritimes.

Of all the possible tracks generated by the models, there are some that have Irene going straight to Nova Scotia and skipping the U.S. We do have much cooler water up here though.

At any rate, we should see some wind and rain on Monday from whatever is left of the storm.

If Irene hits the U.S. east coast this weekend, it is going to be one hell of a storm!

Update: Wednesday afternoon

Accuweather is predicting that Halifax, and Cape Breton Island will see a tropical storm with gusts up to 60 miles per hour, with 4-8 inches of rain, 2-4 feet surge, and very dangerous surf, with severe erosion. Even over to Fredericton is expected to get 4-8 inches of rain.
