Fall… Autumn… whatever you call it.. it’s here

We’ve had a couple weeks of nighttime frost risks. The leaves are turning and falling off. It’s our rainy season. Those little black flies that sit on your eyes are making an appearance. The Tombstone mountains have fresh snow on the peaks many mornings. Eagle Plains is expecting a couple centimetres of snow tomorrow. We’ve had the heat on once (it was only 11°C in the house when we returned from Ontario). The windows are mostly closed now.

It’s undeniable. Summer has exited. Fall is settling in.

But you can’t live here and not embrace it.

So we’re harvesting our green tomatoes, a few at a time, to join our casserole dish on the kitchen counter, where they help each other ripen somehow.

The smell of wood smoke is in the air as people light small fires in their woodstoves to take off the morning chill.

Yet half our wood racks are empty. Or should I say that half our wood racks are already full!! ha! There, that’s better! We had more wood left over last year than usual, so we are trying out a new local wood guy who promises a load of 3 cords in his new electric dump truck for an ok price. Bucked and split! It sounded too good to pass up. We had a bunch of summer adventures and weren’t sure we’d have time to head out into the recent burns to cut down our own trees, and buck, and split them, so if someone else wants to, that works for me!

We’re expecting delivery next week. We should be able to make quick work of it I think. If he can dump it in our back parking spot, then we don’t have to move it too many times. Just throw and stack? (fingers crossed)

I haven’t taken enough photos lately. Just a few from walks with Hank.

Jeff’s been prepping for his upcoming moose hunt. He’s been making meals, kabobs, meatloaf, beef macaroni, and other things that he can freeze and then cook at camp. He’s got a friend coming from Ontario to hunt with him and he’s excited to show off the Yukon! I think they’ll be doing a hunting expedition from the river in our boat!

While Jeff hunts, I’ve got some travel coming up. Next week I have a quick trip down to Whitehorse for an annual mammogram. Once they get you on that list, they say you just have to keep coming every year or you’ll lose your place. This time I had just over a week’s notice!

And soon after that, I’ll be in California for a week for a work meetup.

Jeff in a big plane

Jeff got to do something pretty exciting this week! He participated in a training operation with the Civil Aviation Search and Rescue Association (CASARA). He was up in a Hercules aircraft for a couple of hours doing training!

He’s got a bunch of awesome videos of people jumping OUT of the back of the Hercules! (not him, whew!). Ask him next time you see him!

Wild! It looks like a movie set!

Dental Floss

Speaking of floss (ok, we weren’t, but we’re going to now). My friend Alex recommended a new dental floss that I had to try. Who recommends floss? Aren’t they all the same? Tape or string, flossing sucks.

BUT FLOSSING SUCKS NO MORE!

Alex’s dental hygienist compared regular dental flosses to washing your face with saran wrap. And then told him about this product. Dr. Tung’s Smart Floss!

Dr. Tung’s dental floss is a GAME CHANGER. It is thick, and made up of many strings, almost like butcher twine. Sounds terrible, but it works! It takes so much plaque out from between your teeth, AFTER BRUSHING, that you wonder why you have teeth left in your head. Then afterwards, your teeth feel heavenly, like you were just at the dentist. And it has a cardamon flavour! Mmmmmm! Here’s an Amazon link – https://amzn.to/478O1Hz – but you can probably find a better price somewhere else. I bought one roll for $10 I think at a health food store in Whitehorse. It seemed like way too much to pay for floss, but it’s worth every penny.

  1. I miss stacking 6 cords of Birch and maple for the winter season. Great excerise and nothing beats a wood heat. Used to get for 225 cut, split and delivered in ns

  2. >>Those little black flies that sit on your eyes are making an appearance.
