Here’s a picture of Hank and me looking out the window this morning!
Here are some of the latest fire updates, in case you’re worried about Dawson!
- The Yukon River Quest (race the river from Whitehorse to Dawson, in canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, etc) has decided to end the race in Carmacks so the extra people and race logistics team doesn’t need to come here and add any local stress. It starts today.
- There are specialized structure protection teams from Alberta here. The crews have added a lot more structure protection, they’ve cut trees, they’ve back-burned from properties up to the fire line. They’ve even put a huge water pump in at the ferry landing across the river with hoses up to the West Dawson community to ensure water for suppression activities.
- The fires were quieter last evening, but we also saw more choppers with buckets.
- There are 20km/hr winds forecast for today with thunderstorms, which could move these fires.
- There is a new evacuation alert around Ethel Lake campground (again) in Stewart Crossing. That poor campground has been burned towards a few times in recent years!
- Roads/highways are all open this morning, with travel advisories.
- After a rain last night, the air is much nicer this morning. I’ve opened all the windows to refresh our house!
- Latest fire update from yesterday – Dawson region wildfire update – last updated June 24, 2025
Latest view across the river (WAY clearer than yesterday).

I’ll leave updates here today if anything develops.
Updates:
With all the rain we’ve had today, it has drastically cut the smoke and it feels like the danger is over. (Our windows are open!)
In fact, we went for a drive tonight and no active smoke is visible across the river at all anymore.
Here are the massive water pumps and lines being put in across the river for West Dawson and Sunnydale protection:

The Yukon River campground, just up from the ferry landing on the far side of the river, was closed this afternoon. I’m not sure why it was closed now, and not for the last several days, but the campers have been cleared out of it for now.
Another thunderstorm is going by to the south. The river is so high now, the lower road near the ferry landing is partially under water.

Here are some views from on top of the dome. Here’s looking out Bonanza Rd.

And up the Yukon River (and down below is Dawson City):

And down river:

There is still some snow on the Tombstone ranger behind me, but I didn’t take a picture in that direction this time.

It looks to me like the threat across the river is over. The larger fire out past the airport and towards the Dempster corner is much larger.
Here’s the update for the 25th.
