Earlier this month, I finally attended a Moosehide Gathering!

Every two years, there is a gathering down the Yukon River at the community of Moosehide. It is a Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in (TH) village. The Gathering is a multi-day event celebrating their culture and heritage, and everyone is invited!

Several times Jeff has volunteered to staff shifts, driving a boat back and forth. The village is only accessible by boat (or you can hike over the dome).

This year, Jeff had at least one shift a day, shuttling everyone back and forth, practically non-stop. There were multiple boats dedicated to move people.

This year, I finally had no other plans and was able to attend! It was a hot and beautiful Saturday afternoon!

I walked down to the temporary dock set up for the event and waited in line for my turn. Everyone was outfitted with a life jacket for the ride.

Usually there were 6 boats going back and forth. Elders, performers, and volunteers had their own line, to skip the line.

I got to ride in the big TH boat with the front bow that opens up, so it can transport ATVs and other heavy loads.

In just a few minutes we were already at the Moosehide Village!

Some people stay at Moosehide for the whole event, either at their own little family cabin, or in a tent. Every day there is a feast for supper, available to everyone at no cost.

After walking around and visiting the various vendors, I found a spot on the grass to sit and watch some performers from the Selkirk First Nation.

Everyone was so friendly and happy and spending time together with their families and old friends.

I spent a couple hours watching some performances and then headed back to town before any lines grew again for the boat shuttles.
