New job, settling in

Ha ha ha settling in…. I’ve actually already moved again! Just temporarily, but I’m at a relative’s house for a week to help out.

My new job is going well. My new coworkers have been friendly and welcoming. I can already see that once I’m onboarded and up to speed, I’ll be able to do some great work that builds nicely on all the experience I gained in my last role(s). If I haven’t mentioned where I’m working now, I’m at GitHub and doing similar work to what I was doing previously (that is, stopping people from doing bad things online).

I’ve been super busy between onboarding at a new company, working through all the necessary steps to become an Ontario resident again (truck safety and registration, driver’s license transfer, health card transfer, etc.), and Thanksgiving! Mom hosted this year!

Here’s my new roomie and landlord:

She remembered that I usually go out for supper on Wednesdays, so she took me out for supper on Wednesday so I wouldn’t feel homesick missing Jeff and our friends.

I’m trying to restore a habit of a long daily walk, but I’m not back into a routine yet.

We’ve had company! My cousin Jesse stopped in one night and we chatted for hours. It was really nice!

And my Uncle Joe and Aunt Patricia came for lunch one day! They live in PEI but were in the neighbourhood!

My brother and sister and their families came and stayed overnight before Thanksgiving.

I found an opportunity to play with the fake mustache I got for my birthday last year (thanks Janet, that was fun!)

The weather has been absolutely out of this world. Warm, sunny, and nothing like the winter that has already set in up in Dawson. I’ve been wearing shorts most days!

I’ve met some of my mom’s neighbours already, including Picasso, the neighbour’s dog.

My Aunt Cecilia came for Thanksgiving. So did my Dad and his wife.

Uncle Paul came by for an afternoon too and stayed for dinner with us (pizza!).

Dawson City’s never far from my mind though. The insurance company agent paused our call so he could ask about the northern lights in the Yukon and when was it a good time to go and what airline he should use. The gal at the auto shop asked me if I knew a girl she knew in Dawson. Of course I did. Everyone knows Heidi! We talked about the Pit (RIP) and a Yukon musician she toured with.

Jeff and I have video chats most days and text throughout every day, making plans, and keeping up. Hopefully I’ll keep nicely busy so the time flies until my first trip back to Dawson.

  1. I always enjoy your blog. Now that you are closer to Sarnia, I like to think that I may one day have a chance to meet you. I am glad you are satisfied with your new surroundings.
