My feet…

… are getting longer

Why are my shoes and boots getting too small? Last winter, I hiked in a pair of Keen waterproof shoes with ice cleats on them, and now they are too small!? My toes are smushed up! This keeps happening. Thinking I would be rewarded with a bit of an ego boost that my feet must be getting longer due to all of the walking and hiking I’ve been doing in recent years, I Google’d the reason that my feet could possibly be getting longer at 48 years old, only to find out that I’m old and the ligaments in my feet are loosening causing my decrepit old feet to spread out.

Well shucks.

I remember being a size 9. Then 9.5. Then reluctantly, a 10! I just purchased a new pair of Keen winter hiking boots in a Ladies 11 ! ELEVEN!

Thankfully my feet only seem to be getting longer, and not wider. Let’s save something for after 50.

… took me way up there

On Sunday afternoon I had to go for a walk. I had been recovering for a few days from a nice case of whiplash after slipping on some ice (and falling) that was hiding under some fresh snow on the trail last week. My back and neck were still a bit jarred up, but the sun was out and the trail was calling!

I thought I’d just walk the regular 9th Ave Trail around the perimeter of town, but then I spontaneously took the cut-off to walk up the Moosehide Connector trail. I just kept walking up and up and up and by the time I got home, it was 2.5 hours later and I had 8 km done.

That map doesn’t show the elevation gain very well, but the photos may!

The day after the ferry was pulled, the river filled with ice slush and chunks! They are still moving downstream, but it sure looks like it wants to freeze in place!

It was about -10C and sunny. Just perfect! The wind didn’t pick up until the second half. My glasses kept fogging over too. But I met a few other girls up there hiking, some solo, some in groups, and there were already fresh tracks, despite it snowing just the night before, so everything was easy and perfect! And the snow had congealed with any hidden ice or glacier below it, so there were no slippery spots.

I can’t wait to try my new boots out! It’s been snowing every day this week, and it looks pretty white out there!

  1. My theory is as we age we shrink in height and those inches go into our feet.
    I used to be 5’4″ & wore a size 7 shoe. Now I’m 5’2″ & wear a size 9. Go figure.
