Fish jumping, fire’s burning, bugs are swarming

We decided to not veer off course to visit Prince Rupert or Kitimat. While we’d like to visit them, that’s a lot of driving that requires the same road in and out. And a vacation shouldn’t be all about driving!

So we’re back on the Stewart Cassiar highway, heading north. We’ve found a rec site along the road, Bonus Lake, and have made it our home for the night.

Another van has come in tonight, with a gal and her dog from Nebraska. She’s been on the road since March, and is on her way south after seeing Alaska. She’s works from her van from 7-4pm and then drives after work. What a great way to work and travel!

There is probably room for 3-4 groups here? The sites aren’t formalized. There are a couple picnic tables and two fire pits.

It is beside a small lake (pond?) full of lily pads, jumping fish, and beavers.

There are plenty of mosquitos and black flies here. More than we’ve had everywhere put together! The mosquito coils take care of the mosquitoes but the black flies are getting beat off by one of those zapper rackets that humanely 😁 electrocutes them.

We don’t believe there is a fire ban here. There were campfires in our campground last night and no signs along the highways today. We don’t have wood but the last campers left some half burnt logs that have come to life nicely with some bacon grease as coercion.

I chased Hank around with the bug spray but the bugs still ate up his ears, so he’s napping in the camper while we enjoy this little smoky campfire while swatting the bugs.

This photo is from easy on the day. I was sneaking my way along a river

It’s funny how little we’ve retained of most of these communities that we are driving through again, three weeks later, but in the opposite direction. Smithers was the nicest town. Jeff stopped to hose out his squeaky wheels at a car wash.

Good night!

Update. MOST DEFINITELY NOT A GOOD NIGHT !

One billion mosquitoes attacked the camper. And they found their way in around the screens. We killed a hundred of them with that tennis racket thing that zaps them? I could hear their buzzing THROUGH the walls and windows.

We wanted to light a mosquito coil inside but didn’t want to set off the smoke detector in the camper and bother our neighbour. Ahhhh what a bad sleep. We closed every window and they were coming in or had hidden somewhere stealthy. I thought we would surely die without oxygen so I open the two ceiling vents as they are well screened.

Stupid mosquitos.
