Thunder Bay!

Two days in one because I’ve taken almost no photos and time is short!

We stopped at Kakabeka Falls on the way into town. Photos!

Once in Thunder Bay, we regrouped at the Swiss Chalet, and then it was time to show Cathy around!

I lived here years ago, for University.

First, the view from Hillcrest Park and the marina!

Hello Sleeping Giant!! Cathy, meet Lake Superior!!

We even made a little stop at Lakehead! I made a stop at the Forestry lounge and peeked into the Agora. Not much has changed!

Then we went to my brother-in-law Brian’s house, where we’ve stayed the last two nights.

Last night, my friends Jen and Karen put on a supper for us at Karen’s and the 5 of us chatted for hours. It was so nice! But I didn’t take a single picture!

Today, Cathy and I went to explore Silver Islet and Sibley Provincial Park – where the Sleeping Giant land mass is. I have never been out there!

I took a side adventure to see the Thunder Bay look out and it was a crazy gravel road. I sure tested my manual transmission driving skills (don’t have any) and even had to roll back down a hill and put it in 4×4 to make it up! Eventually the road turned to all bedrock!

At the end we got to walk out onto a metal platform 100 metres above the Lake Superior coast! I was totally cool with it, until those last two steps to the edge!

Then we went to Silver Islet, a really old community at the end of the Sibley Peninsula. There was once a silver mine off the shore on a little island here. The General store was open and we even dined in their tea room (well, on the deck, in the drizzle) and I chatted with the owner a bit who once toured with a band and played in Whitehorse. When I said I was from Dawson City, he asked where I was really from. He said it was like the land of the misfit toys up there and somehow we all found our way there, but no one was actually born there. Pretty close!

On Jen’s recommendation, we found the old Silver Islet cemetery trail and hiked in to pay our respects to their pioneers.

Later, we stopped to visit Terry Fox, the most inspiring Canadian to ever have lived.

Tonight we took Brian out to Montana’s for his hospitality. Unfortunately my options were slim because they use their fryers and the grills for shrimp so I could only have a steak cooked in its own skillet.

Then we came back to Brian’s to watch Knight Rider and Corner Gas, because he said his TV had every show, and he was right.

Tomorrow we should be off to our next destination but because we can’t do boring, my truck’s engine light came on this evening. I’ll have to get the error code checked before I know if we can safely proceed!

Good night!
