Yep, still cold

Yep, still cold

It’s January. Of course, it is still cold.

Turns out, that was our 6th-coldest December in Dawson City since 1898.

Zooming in on that chart for Dawson City:

I’ll have to look more at the weather from 1917 in the records my Uncle Joe sent me. That sounds like a doozie!

We are going through firewood at an impressive pace. Two Rubbermaid totes a day, instead of our usual 1. Right now it’s -47C/-53F, and it is forecast to dip to -50C/-58F tomorrow morning. We have enough wood for the winter, but I don’t think we’ll have the extra that we usually have left over.

There’s ice on the windows because we jacked up the humidifer and it forms behind the blinds overnight. I love our triple-pane windows. Zero regrets. We have a lot of windows though, by choice, and it is noticeable warmer in here when our blinds are pulled, but there is no way I could leave them closed during the day. That would be crazy.

I thought I’d do something fun for you! I recorded a video of us going to the post office and grocery store this afternoon – at 2pm – if you want to take a drive across town with us.

Hank’s taking it all in stride.

My next puzzle

This one is a doozie! Remember how I said it was a puzzle in a puzzle? Look at this info from the box:

So far, it has started out easier than the last one, because most of the pieces are regular sizes and shapes, and pieces with a flat side belong on the outside edge. The quality is outstanding. Nice thick pieces.

But after doing the larger sections with obvious patterns, it’s getting quite a bit more difficult. None of the characters match the picture, so you can’t find a piece with a partial face and know where it goes.

Progress has been slow today!

Can I finish it before returning to work on Monday? Not a chance. But we rarely eat at the kitchen table anyway, so I’ll press on!

Jeff’s turkey pies

Jeff has started making his turkey pies for the freezer.

He’s doing them in batches over two days. I think he’ll end up putting at least 8 in the freezer. Lucky us! That’s many nice suppers that we don’t have to prepare later down the road.

Anything else?

Other than these brief updates, we’re hibernating. Dreaming of future adventures, camping destinations, and Jeff’s retirement. He’s been watching a lot of boat life videos on YouTube this weekend. Maybe we’ll sell it all and move to a yacht and sail the seven seas. You in Hank?

  1. Happy New Year!

This got me curious. When it’s cold like that, how is the humidity, and how is humidity for y’all at home during the winter months?

    1. Happy New Year Jeremy! It is very, very dry here. I keep a bowl of water on the wood stove all winter, but last week we dipped to 13% humidity, which makes my eyes so dry and painful and the static everywhere is shocking 😀 I’ve got a humidifier going now and we’re up to 30% and rising, despite creating glaciers at the bottom of the windows while it is this cold out.
