Spring Updates

Nothing substantial today, just a bunch of pictures and brief updates!

Garage flooded

Our garage flooded! The base of the garage doors is flush with the back alley. In the afternoons, the meltwater is flowing pretty decently back there, and without any ditches, it flooded our garage one afternoon last week while we weren’t paying attention.

It was surprisingly deep! I wish there was a drain, but there is only a drainage pail, so it was quickly full and then half the garage was under muddy water. We quickly started tossing stuff out of the water but there really wasn’t too much that got soaked. Most things are in tubs and totes and pails.

Jeff used a little submersible pump that we use to empty the hot tub to get the water out. He also used a pickaxe to make a new trench down the edge of the alley to catch the water before it flowed into the garage again.

Our wonderful neighbour Sylvia lent us a commercial mop and bucket and soap for a garage floor and we did 3 passes on it the next day to at least disenfect from anything that was in that water. Once the flood risk passes, we’ll do another round of thorough cleaning to get the rest of the mud and gunk out.

Around town

Some spring thaw photos from around town.

The Triple J opened for the season last Wednesday, so of course we were there to welcome them back (and have something different to eat!)

Here’s some photos from our walk yesterday.

April and May can be the grossest time of the year to see Dawson City. It’s dirty. Muddy. Covered in a winter’s worth of dog poo. And garbage. And silt.

Seagulls were spotted almost a week ago now. The old wives’ tale says the Yukon River will break up two weeks after the first seagull is spotted! Or is it 10 days. Anyway, there are Canadian geese and mallard ducks back too, hanging out in puddles, waiting for the bigger ponds and rivers to thaw.

I think people have finally stopped driving across the river. It’s got water and mushy snow on it. But I don’t think break up is imminent. Probably another couple of weeks? I guess it depends on the weather!

Hike up Mary McLeod

Today after work, Jeff was busy helping Kyle change out his winter tires in our (dirty) garage (Jeff switched my tires yesterday! Thanks handsome!), so Hank and I decided it was spring enough to hike up Mary McLeod, and around the lower Dome Road back to town.

It was a good walk! It was warm enough to just wear a light jacket. Hank wore his fur coat.

Climbing up that hill used to just about kill me. I’d have to stop so many times to lower my heart rate. I’ve come a long way!

No bears were spotted by either of us today, but it’s probably about the time to start carrying bear spray.

I hope someone across the river was burning something today and one of last year’s fires hasn’t sparked up.

Hank really wanted me to have a longer right arm when he spotted the mallards in the puddles at the baseball fields.

It is a nice 5.7km loop with the equivalent of 41 flights of stairs (according to my tracking apps today).

What else?

I’m packing and prepping! I’m off to a work meetup in Singapore soon! I’m really excited, even if I am slightly terrified of their hot and humid weather!

Also soon we’ll be mounting the camper on Jeff’s new truck to see how it fits! It’s almost camping season!
