For the final show of my winter get-out-there-and-sample-new-things series, my friend Janet and I went to see the Snotty Nose Rez Kids tonight!
They are a hip hop duo from British Columbia who have been up here before to play the summer music festival. They won a Juno last year for Rap Album of the Year!
But first…. John from Dawson warmed up the sold-out crowd!

With his small-town charm, I remembered having a super drunken conversation with John from Dawson when he was selling me a hot dog outside the Pit in the middle of the night one summer, years ago.

The crowd at this show was such a mixed group of all ages, probably with only the similarity of living in Dawson City at this moment. There were business owners, moms, toddlers asleep in their arms, young boys delighted at the vibration from the subwoofers, a man who lives in a cave, grandparents, and everything in between.

We were a bit put off when we arrived and saw no chairs on the floor. Oh dear! It had the atmosphere of an awkward high school dance. We darted for a couple empty chairs pushed up against the wall at the front by the stage and we bopped in our chairs for John from Dawson.
But when the Snotty Nose Rez Kids got on the stage, we stood up and got on the floor!

It was so loud. SO LOUD. But for the first time, I remembered some disposable foam earplugs, since my ears were already ringing this week. The subwoofers we were standing beside were vibrating our chest bones. A couple times I thought the vibration was beating my heart for me.

I have never been to a hip hop concert before. It was so much energy!

They put on a really interactive show, and even came down on the floor a couple of times. One of them kept throwing water on us from a water bottle. That was refreshing! Great energy!

It was nice that it was an all-ages show. I bet these kids will remember this show forever. Being so close to a couple stars. Fist bumping them. Getting close up videos from standing against the stage.

Have you ever listened to the Snotty Nose Rez Kids? Here’s a sampling for you:

Overall, excellent show, great music, talented musicians, and I’m really glad we tried something new!

Oh, and bonus picture, from dinner with Alex and Janet before the show!
