I have not been able to open iTunes since I upgraded to Windows 8.
I thought the newly released iTunes 11 would solve the problem, but the result is the same.
I tried some tricks and tips I found online. Still won’t run. I deleted iTunes, the Control Panel, and even Quicktime and reinstalled iTunes 11. Still nothing.
Windows 8 betas have been out for months. Why hasn’t Apple tweaked iTunes so it will run on Windows 8? On purpose? Did Windows 8 tweak its operating systems so iTunes can’t run?

Hi Lisa.
This has happened to me before.
Apple has a really really odd way of doing things. You need to uninstall about a dozen programs that all come with iTunes during the first download.
I’ve needed to do this about half a dozen times in the past 3 years alone.
Here is a link to the Apple support forum page on properly uninstalling and re installing iTunes.

P.S. make sure you do Step 1 in the correct order!

Sorry… bad link. That was for Windows XP. Here is the one for Vista/7 which should theoretically work the same with Win8 because Microsoft made it backward compatible with Win7 programs.

Didn’t work Kyle 🙁
Lisa
FIXED IT!!
So far I have read dozens of sites and message board and problem reports and tried all of their solutions including:
-reinstalled iTunes a dozen or more times
-completely deleted all Apple software twice
-flashed my BIOS to the latest version
-ran CCleaner on my registry and cleaned up errors
-installed Windows Media Centre
-ran ‘sfc /scannow’ 3 times
-analyzed the process tree (iTunes would start, but never complete loaded)
FINALLY I figured it out. I have 2 hard drives. There was still a rogue entry in my start up file that referenced iTunes in its old location on a different drive, even though it had been fully uninstalled. Using CCleaner I disabled that call in the startup and I have iTunes again!
Lisa
Well that was short lived!! iTunes isn’t opening again 🙁
Nick
Is it a “folder ‘iTunes’ is on a locked disk” error?
Lisa
Hi Nick.
I’m not getting any visible error. iTunes just doesn’t start.
Lisa
YESSSSS! After another 4 hour marathon session of trying everything imaginable to get iTunes to run, including downgrading to an earlier version, I have found the problem!
I disabled a bunch of programs in my Windows startup list and rebooted. iTunes started up without a problem.
I don’t know yet which program is causing the conflict, I’m just grateful I have iTunes again and can stop deleting and reinstalling iTunes over and over again!
Justin
Thanks for updating with your working solution!

Wow, I am SO glad I use a Mac after reading your iTunes 11 horrors on Windows.
Lisa
Haha I hear ya Blair! I’m now living on the Mac side of the world and oddly enough, haven’t had any more mysterious problems 🙂
