Sleep has become incredible difficult for me lately. I’ve never had this problem before. I used to be able to sleep anywhere, on anything, and through anything.

Now I’m awake until 3am more and more often. Tortured because I can’t quite get over the last hurdle to sleep. I don’t know what it is – could it be a symptom of the surgical menopause? Cancer treatments? Or simply because I don’t do anything to exert myself physically or mentally while I’m on sick leave from work and it is -40 outside?

I’m uncomfortable when I try to sleep. My bones hurt. My muscles are weak. The bed is too hard. I’m sometimes tense and frustrated because I can’t get comfortable.

So it is time to fix this. First, we need a comfortable bed. Back in September 2017, I broke up with our memory foam mattress (see that post) and moved it to our guest room. Since then, we’ve been using the mattress set we bought for our guests – a mattress what was specifically designed to be slept on only occasionally (meaning cheap?). It is too high, already sagging, and too small. It is crazy to me that humans settle down with a partner, strive for a decent sized house, and then cram both people into a few square feet at night. Humans are weird.

SO! We are upgrading to a King mattress. We have so few options though compared to people who live in cities. The Brick will ship us furniture, but both of my last terrible beds have been purchased there. I don’t want to repeat these mistakes. So I started researching these online-only, bed-in-a-box, mattress stores. I did my research and decided on an Endy. But it is not to be! Their customer service was a huge disappointment, and you can’t ship to a northern remote area without going through the customer service department.

So I looked elsewhere, and bought a Douglas mattress online. It is a Canadian made mattress, sold only in Canada. Their customer service was quick and wonderful. I had two choices for shipping, FedEx, and our local airline – Air North. I know FedEx doesn’t drive up here, so it must be sharing the delivery with a local freight company. Instead of that uncertainty, I went for the $10 more option and our new mattress in a box will be coming to us by plane!

I hope this isn’t a big mistake. It is a foam mattress, but not a memory foam. It is supposed to be great to not have the pressure points on my sore bones like from a coil mattress. And if it isn’t suitable, we have 120 days to return it! (Usually they will donate the returned mattress to a local charity rather than shipping it back). That sure sounds better than the “mattress inspectors” other companies hire to assess their refunds.

Going up to a King size has another problem – we don’t have a bed frame that size! So we are finally getting a bed frame and headboard and a couple new side tables. These are from the Brick and surely will be cheaply made, but it’ll work. We’ve been wanting to buy bedroom furniture for 11 years! Look at us growing up 😀

That also meant we needed new sheets so thanks to Bed Bath and Beyond’s $50 shipping rate, we’ve ordered a summer and winter set and a couple of lamps for our new side tables.

Doesn’t shopping from a remote area sound fun? Wayfair quoted me $350 shipping charge to send just one order of King sized sheets!! Most other companies won’t bother even offering shipping to us. Oh well, where there is a will there is a way. I’d choose to live up here any day over living near a shopping mall.

    Those shipping costs are insane! You may be up North but you’re still in Canada. Geez.

    I’m sure the lousy mattress is contributing to your problem sleeping, even if it’s not the whole problem. Everything contributes. And if you’re like me, the gerbil in your head JUST WON’T SHUT UP. I went months not being able to sleep till about 3 am, the same way – couldn’t slip over that last barrier. And then I’d sleep all day. Really, all day – I’d wake up and fall asleep over and over again till 5 or 6 in the afternoon. It’s gotten a little better but I still have days when I can’t stay awake. The joys of depression.

    I hope you get your new bed soon and it makes everything better. Fingers crossed for you.


    1. Luckily I haven’t been that tired and haven’t been napping either. Maybe I just need way less sleep now? I have no idea. I’m not even really thinking about stuff, just can’t completely drift off. If I wake up to pee, thankfully I can fall right back to sleep. Just the first time is hard!

      1. I meant to tell you what helped me – playing music or a podcast really low. I just float away. Asleep within ten minutes, every time.

        Also, who the hell am I to be complaining about depression when you’re dealing with so much more? Please forgive the navel-gazing. I really need to look around me once in a while.
