Gibsons, BC – Home of The Beachcombers!

Gibsons, BC – Home of The Beachcombers!

We spent most of our day in Gibsons, along BC’s Sunshine Coast!

If you are Canadian and my age or older, you’ve probably watched The Beachcombers! It aired on Canadian television from 1972 until 1990! It was filmed in Gibsons!

Here’s me with Relic and Nick!

There is a section of the Gibsons museum that features the show. There is a piece of the counter there from the diner on the show, Molly’s Reach!

You could sit there and put on the headset and listen to an episode that was playing above!

They also had Relic’s clothes, and the sign from Nick’s Salvage!

One of the scripts!

Seeing these artifacts was so cool!! I had a great time talking to the museum employee. About the Dawson City Music Festival of all things!

Unfortunately Jeff missed out on the museum. He stayed with Hank in the truck because it was pretty warm already.

Of course I bought a t-shirt. It looks like it was designed and printed in 1972 🤣

The museum was worth visiting. Good displays, over two floors. The Sunshine Coast life was and is reliant on boats since the roads don’t/can’t climb over the mountains to connect to these communities. The old photos of the boats docking, bringing loved ones and supplies and ice cream reminded me of tales of Dawson life before the highway.

The display that touched me the most was the Japanese family that had lived nearby for decades and raised children and had a farm and business before being sent to an internment camp for being from Japan. Their property and belongings were sold and they never returned. How sad humankind can be.

Jeff and I also visited the public market and the marina.

Hey this place looks like Relic’s!

And there it is! Molly’s Reach!! It was one of the main scenes in the TV show but wasn’t a diner until afterwards. Just the outside was used on the show.

Still, it was awesome to see. I stepped inside too. It didn’t look like the show but it was very busy!

This town is really nice. But to live here I think you need a little car. There are crazy hills, narrow roads, and nearly vertical driveways that make Colette’s new driveway in Port Hardy look flat.

We managed okay by avoiding half the streets that were so crazy steep and we found a decent spot to park on the side of the street.

We were thinking today that this Sunshine Coast route would be pretty stressful if you were hauling a bigger trailer. Come to think of it, lots of B.C. suits just little cars.

We found a shaded park afterwards to park at, and had lunch and a bit of downtime before catching the ferry we booked for mid afternoon.

Our last ferry took us over to Horseshoe Bay, just north of Vancouver.

We booked the last site at the Whistler RV and Campground last night. It’s about 15 km south of Whistler.

The views from this campground! Well not from our little spot in the unserviced section but we took a walk through the large park tonight to check it all out!

There are free warm showers here too! Actually this park has many amenities including a cafe and playground and basketball and laundry and ping pong and a games room. Even sinks for doing your dishes.

Today marks the end of our southern adventure because we need to turn back north. We will spend many days likely driving the same route north, but I’m sure we’ll find an adventure to blog about each day! Wait until you hear who we’re meeting for breakfast tomorrow!

Good night!
